Set to text by Patrick’s brother Andrew, this piece is essentially a Hymn to the Virgin. The dense choral texture (three soprano parts and two altos) and the occasional false relation intensify the emotional impact of a devotional piece, tenderly accompanied by harp and cello.
In heavenly
blue
of stained-glass
you are
dressed.
Within
your heart
a raging sea
could rest.
Distant stars
are woven
in your hair.
Your sweet
and gentle
touch
can heal
all care.
You are
Mother,
Lover,
Bride
and Friend.
Your life of
simple service
has no end.
Your love
and beauty
will not,
cannot,
die.
You are
creation
in perfection:
the apple
of His eye.
